Jim's Movie Reviews" Pineapple Express
So, the other day, I went and saw Pineapple Express. It hasn't received quite the amount of publicity as Seth Rogen's other films, so I wasn't really sure what to expect walking in; which probably helped the experience, I think, seeing as how the movie wasn't grossly overhyped and set up to fail.
Firstly, let me say that I thought this was one of the funnier movies I've seen in the past couple of years. Sure, there hasn't been a surplus of funny movies lately, but you get my point.
Yeah, it may be a stoner comedy at heart, and that might turn a few people off of it, but it's not all just mindless comedy and physical slapstick comedy. Just watching the characters interact is fun in itself, and the story allows them to shine in their own particular ways. James Franco's Saul in particular really stuck out to me. The acting in this movie is really quite good for the most part, but there are a few exceptions. Gary Cole and ...I forget the female cop's name... anyway, looked out of it and I didn't buy into them at all. But that's about all the bad I can say in that department.
The story is pretty ridiculous and a bit disjointed and random, but it works well with the overall feel of the movie. It's a fairly clever premise that will have people saying "I could have thought of that" but never did. Two stoners basically getting shot at and freaking out throughout the movie. I loved the simplicity of it.
Another aspect of the movie that might get overlooked is the action, which was probably the biggest surprise to me. There were some pretty decent action scenes thrown in, and they managed to sprinkle in some comedy into those as well. That might be what separated this movie from the pack a little as far as comedies go. I partcularly enjoyed the car chase. You'll see why when you see it.
A Few Positives
I loved all the subtle little jokes sprinkled throughout the movie
James Franco and Seth Rogen had great chemistry together
I really enjoyed Red, for some reason
A few negatives
I can only see Gary Cole as Bill Lumburgh
The entire thing with Dale's girlfriend seemed unneccesary
Some of the comedy might only appeal to the stoner demographic.
Final Verdict
8.0/10
People will probably be quoting this movie for a while

I liked it, but it strongly reminded me of what would happen if you gave Duffy and Bret drugs, one gun, and ten hand grenades, and then let them roam free.

Hehe, which is a bit scary Rachel, especially considering their plans for future careers. O.O
